A Brief History of the Club
At a monthly meeting on April 30th 1914 of the "Neath Urban District Council Streets Committee", Alderman Charles moved that the Mount Pleasant Recreation Ground Bowling Green be officially opened on Saturday May 9th. 1914.
This was passed by Daniel Harry, the ex-mayor, and councillors John Davies, Thomas Jones and E.S. Phillips. This was the first public bowling green to be opened in the borough and the birth of "Neath Town Bowls Club".
During the early fifties the club was at a low ebb. The members used the "Busmans Club" as their headquarters, now "Brynhyfryd Social Club" and the headquarters to this day. A challenge was made to the Busman's skittles' team to play a game of bowls and that was the start of the club's revival.
It is interesting to note that Mount Pleasant Recreation Ground, locally known as the "Rec", was officially opened on July 24th. 1913 and during this period tenders were submitted for the bowling green they were as follows:
William Wood - London £120
Mssrs. Cilbrans - Altrincham £130.10.0
It was then left to the chairman and Borough Engineer to consider the tenders and accept the most suitable. It went to Clibrans for £127.2.11.
The Streets Committee of the time also arranged with the Manager of the Glamorgan Farm School (a correction centre for delinquent boys) for the services of a gang of boys for weeding the bowling green when the green was being generally overhauled.
The club has had many successes in it's long history, a large number of which are included in the achievements page on this site, and hopefully will continue to do so for many a long year.
